Memo from the President: Thank you to all those who attended the last meeting and supported the club. As you are aware we had our club enter the Mudgereeba Muscle Car Show 2 weekends ago, as a result we won the Best Presented Club award. A club member also won the Peoples Choice Award. Thank you to everyone who attended, it was a great effort from all. On the weekend the David Stokoe Memorial Golf Day was a great success. Thankyou to all who attended, from Club Members to friends and family outside the club. Also thanks to Russel Pavey for his report on the day:
THE DAVE STOKOE MEMORIAL GOLF DAY UPDATE The Dave Stokoe Memorial Golf day arrived a fair bit quicker this year. It seems to arrive quicker every year. Dave was a guy who loved a laugh and a drink. The 22 starters who made it along to his golf day did him proud with lots of both. The weather was kind to us this year, with a perfect winter’s day at Dave’s favourite golf course, The Burleigh Palms. It’s a nine hole course with lots of water and ducks. The guy renting us the equipment could tell our high skill level and offered us a garbage bin full of golf balls. Most of us took as many balls as we could fit into our bags before heading out. The first Tee was a hard place to be if you were teeing off with everyone there to see how badly you could hit a ball. Chop buckled under the pressure and sent two balls straight into the scrub just metres off the tee much to the delight of everyone watching. There were many words exchanged with lots of laughter. Garry Dobson proved to be the star of our group with way too much power on every stroke. It took several of us to convince him that a wood shouldn’t be used on greens! Garry also renamed his sand wedge (SW) to South West because that’s mostly where his ball went when he hit it. Personally, I was grateful for the SPDRA rule that says we don’t count higher than 10 on any hole. I did witness several teams taking advantage of the other SPDRA rule that says if you can run to your ball and hit it again that it only counts as one hit. J The first few holes just whizzed by but I did notice that the lost ball count was much higher than expected with Darren Booth asking for more balls by the third tee. (Maybe that duck was giving him cheek) There was also some collateral damage to the Burleigh Palms neighbouring houses and one Tee off sign but overall, not too bad for us drag racers. The next few holes saw lots of punters on the wrong fairways trying to get back over to where they were supposed to be. I also noticed that whenever a ball went near another team that the ball would sink into the ground with great force. Very strange! The final few holes saw some amazing long shots that just flew high into the air and curved off into the scrub. With spare balls being thin on the ground, the club house was a welcome sight! I did notice that an un-named club president and his group got confused on how to count to nine holes and headed to the clubhouse ONE HOLE early. He must have been delirious from lack of fluid. Poor bloke! The last part of the afternoon went very quickly with everyone enjoying a couple of drinks and plenty of bench racing. I’m sure that Dave would have been very proud to see us all enjoying ourselves at his favourite golf course. We even punted a couple of balls over into the old cow paddock in his honour. Next year, I’m gunna do some practising and knock off my PB of 85 Thanks to Lawrie Moore for providing this article.
